What is it all about?
Saber Combat Academy Ltd. is a community based around the faithful recreation of the combat forms of the iconic lightsaber. Created by fans of the Star Wars movies who wanted a fast-paced, intricate and entertaining combat system that allowed users to fight competitively against one another without the need for full body armour, whilst also keeping true to the visual appeal of the lightsaber itself.
Alongside this, the classes aim to teach Control of the body and mind under the themeing of the Jedi. Being mindful warrior monks who seek internal wisdom as well as combat skills. Classes are also fantastic community spaces, with a good focus on socialising and inclusion for those who may find it hard to make friends in traditional settings.
Classes operate weekly across the South West of England and focus on the training of ‘The Seven Forms of Lightsaber Combat’ as intepreted and created by our Head Instructor. If you attend a class, you will learn genuine sword skills with a stunt/performance twist, alongside footwork and structure that is transferrable to other sword arts and game spaces such as LARP. We also train orbits and flow, saber tricks and choreography for performance, film and theatre with a growing repitoir of new weapon types and skills.
Do I need my own Lightsaber to attend class?
The short answer is No. We have sabers available for use to newcomers and can recommend sellers and our own range of sabers if you’re interested in picking one up.
The longer answer is No, but… For all SCA classes, we recommend the use of combat-grade sabers with duel ready blades. Typically, these are made from aluminium and use polycarbonate blades. Lightsabers can be in-hilt (RGB) or Pixel style for classes but we ask that strobing effects are kept to a minimum for safety.
Due to the contact nature of our classes, we cannot allow the use of toy sabers, flick-outs, hasbro replicas and home made sabers. Combat worth is based on the quality and assuredness of the build and materials used in the construction of the hilt and blade. We have experimented with different types of blades and hilts, different makers and manufractuers over the past ten years and we are kept up to date with the latest in lightsaber technology, so we feel we have good sources and awareness to suggest brands and retailers alongside our own range of sabers.
Can I bring my own saber to class?
Yes. We will safety check all sabers before the start of class to ensure they meet our useage criteria.
They must be made by a known manufractuer, have a polycarbonate blade of at least ‘Mid Grade’ or a 2mm wall with a rounded tip. No additional prongs, spikes or blades on the hilt and no personal customisation to the electronics.
Where can I buy Lightsabers from?
You can purchase a wide variety of combat rated sabers directly from us! We have a large catalogue of hilts available and can provide details on which type of style would suit you, your budget and what you want to get out of your saber.
All our sabers are rated for combat, with a years electronics warranty, mid-grade blades and adhere to our combat rules.
Prices start from £50 and we always monitor our competitors to ensure competitive prices.
